Type: Family Restaurant & Bar
Introduction:
Maxan's Dubai is a sub restaurant group of Henbridge Hospitalities Pvt Ltd. Try as much, I could not find a Dubai connection with the restaurant so I really have no clue as to why is it named Maxan's Dubai. The other sub restaurant group names are Little King, Shagun & Dalchini. They have presence at Mira Road, Bhayander & Thane in Mumbai and a couple of restaurants in Ahmedabad. I go this info from their website www.henbridgehospitalities.com This is a site you should visit for a hilarious laugh. The language / design / content is atrocious and it looks as if it has been made by an amateur.
Ambiance:
The hotel offers the visitor a choice of ambiance, a unique proposition and must be a first in Mumbai. One is a rustic dhaba style arrangement and the other is that of an extremely formal setting. I liked the 'dhaba' style as it also had a live ghazal show on (select days only, please confirm on phone). The table and seating were quite low but surprisingly comfortable. Surroundings are done up with a dark wood veneer finish and the soft white lighting is adequate. However, I wish the hotel staff clean the area more often as there was some noticeable dust all around.
Food:
Probably, there was some confusion regarding the Menu. Some items in the menu are explained quite well whereas there are several ones left blank. The inclusion of Malvani Cuisine is an afterthought as it just has 5 items. It looks like a last minute addition to the menu to attract the local predominantly Maharashtrian crowd. Also, there is significantly more variety for the non vegans.
My meal there was a short one as I had to catch on a movie later. It comprised of a starter, a masala papad, a vegetable and rotis. The masala papad was a fried punjabi masala papad, topped with a good helping of chopped onions & tomatoes and sprinkled with red chilly powder to add the spice. The starter was a Paneer Banjara Tikka. It looked interesting from the description provided "Cottage Cheese, Spinach leaves, onion, tomatoes, red & green peppers grilled in tandoor". What got me excited was the inclusion of spinach leaves and that is the reason I thought it has been named as Banjara tikka instead of a Paneer Tikka. To my utter dismay, when the dish arrived, there was not a hint of spinach in it. On questioning the waiter and his boss, they admitted that it is a printing mistake in the menu!! Nevertheless, the starter was good with soft paneer well marinated, grilled with the mentioned veggies and a lil spicy too. The only disappointment was that it was not the dish I was expecting. The main course ordered was a Diwani Handi and Rotis. I confirmed the description of Diwani Handi to be sure; "Mixed Vegetables with Spinach and Mushrooms". The main course I had was the best part of my experience in this restaurant. Mix vegetable, well cooked, less oily, more quantity and served hot with even hotter rotis. Rotis were soft, made of pure wheat flour.
Service:
Service was prompt. However, a glaring issue, as found in most restaurants, the waiters are ill equipped to explain about several items on the menu. Restaurant owners have to understand that an interaction with the waiter is the first experience a customer goes through when ordering his meal in a restaurant. An improper interaction can tarnish the image of the restaurant.
Value for Money:
Rs.130 for the starter and Rs. 135 for the main course vegetable make the pricing for the starter look ridiculously expensive. And even more ridiculous after one sees the quantity of the main course vegetable being offered. Main course dishes are reasonably well priced. Total of all items I had (papad, starter, veg, 3 rotis) came to just Rs. 330/-.
Specialty
In this case, I feel their specialty lies not in the food, but in the choice of 2 different ambiance on offer. You can select the one which suits your mood.
To Sum it up:
Overall there are several factors that detract from a perfect experience in this restaurant. If the cleanliness is improved, waiters are enlightened a bit more on whats there on the menu of the restaurant they work in and the items on the menu are explained properly, that should complete the experience. The food is good, there is a choice of ambiance which you can select as per your mood and of course the live ghazal show adds to the experience. Try it once..
