Review of Only Parathas

Name: Only Parathas
Address: Sunview Co-op Hsg. Society, Building No.4, Opp. Sahakar Cinema, Tilak Nagar, Chembur, Mumbai – 400089
Tel: 25260934 / 35 / 36
Type: Family Restaurant (Pure Vegetarian)
On the Menu: Lots of Parathas, North Indian (limited items)
Introduction
SD Hospitality, the firm that runs and manages “Only Parathas”, have met with considerable success with their outlets at Bandra and Andheri. An idea of Mr. Pappi Singh Arora inspired by Delhi’s Paratha Galli, it was almost certain that it would meet with success. Expansion plans are in the pipeline to open several other branches across the city.
It was only natural for this vegetarian restaurant to come to the Chembur – Ghatkopar belt, as the major chunk of the population in Ghatkopar is vegetarian. In fact, I assume this will be the future trend for all vegetarian restaurants, the latest example being that of Little Italy opening near Shoppers Stop, Chembur.
Ambience
The restaurant is located in quite an obscure place, off the main road. However, once you get inside, it is pretty comfortable. It is not as big as the Bandra outlet and thus even the seating configuration is meant for small families. Thus if you plan to go with more no. of members, do make a reservation to avoid waiting.
Food
I was a bit surprised at first looking at the menu, as it consisted of much more than parathas. After hearing the name of the restaurant, one does not expect so many more items to be there. There were starters, a few north-indian dishes and parathas. I ordered a Pahadi Paneer Tikka. Though it took some time to come, it was worth the wait. Soft paneer, marinated and cooked well on the tandoor, in a slightly spicy mint covering was perfectly complemented by the raita (chopped vegetables in curd).
Then we ordered a babycorn paneer pudina paratha and an Amritsari Kulcha. You can make your own paratha using the different options of stuffing available. There is also an option of single / double layer i.e. whether you want the stuffing to be open on one side or completely covered. All parathas are made in pure desi ghee and are served with black dal, chole, raita and pickle. As a result, a single paratha will be sufficient unless you are Yokozuna’s relative.
I found the Amritsari Kulcha to be much better than the one I ordered for myself. It was mildly spicy, single layered with garlic and spices. Tasted awesome with the chole / dal. The other paratha had an excessive taste of mint. I did not expect so much mint. All the three ingredients were simply grinded together and stuffed into the double layered paratha. Next time maybe I would go in for some other combination.
Service
The waiters were courteous and polite. However, time taken to get the food was too long. At almost 20 min for a single starter, I feel its too long.
Value for Money
The Pahadi Paneer tikka was priced at Rs. 99. It seemed expensive for a starter, but then the quality and taste made up for the high price. Both the parathas were priced at Rs. 120 each. It seemed reasonable, especially when one considers the quantity and the complementary items that come along with it. Paratha prices start at Rs. 100, price of the most basic single layered Alu Paratha.
Speciality
Amritsari Kulcha (really worth it, don’t miss this)
To Sum it up
It is a restaurant serving good, quality vegetarian food at reasonable prices, especially parathas. Recommended if you are a pure vegan (read Gujurati, Marvadi) and love parathas!
